While you are in downtown Indy, you should take a few minutes off and enjoy some fabulous Indiana craft beer. Indiana has become widely known for the quality and variety of beer being brewed here. Indianapolis, of course, is the Capital City of the state and home to a number of unique craft breweries, many of which are within a fairly short distance of the Indiana Convention Center. A number of these breweries are doing something special for Gen Con. It would be a shame to go back home without having had the experience of at least sampling a couple of the tasty brews that are so readily available and to experience some of the very cool venues where they are being served.

Scotty’s Brew House has a downtown Indy location at 1 Virginia Avenue. In addition to guest taps, they serve up beer brewed locally at their sister company, Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company. Head brewer, Keely Thomlinson and a couple of associates are actually hosting a large (12 player) role playing event (sold out) at Scotty’s titled, Cthulhu Brewer Year Thr3e (Game ID: RPG18144618). The Tap Brewing Company serves up their brews in downtown Indy at 306 N. Delaware Street. In addition to their awesome house brews they also have a number of guest taps, bottles, a full bar and an extensive food menu. This year they have brewed up two beers for Gen Con. One is a single hopped American IPA dubbed Burning Hands IPA. The other is the Night Huntress Schwarzbier, a Bavarian style black lager. Sun King Brewing Company has produced the official beer of Gen Con 2018, Everlasting Gamer. This delicious brew will be tapped on Georgia Street on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Sun King’s downtown tap room is located at 135 College Avenue where one can try their other tasty beers and, new this year, have some awesome food from Oca/Goose the Market. Chilly Water Brewing Company can be found at 719 Virginia Avenue in the historic Fletcher Place neighborhood. TwoDEEP Brewing Co. is located at 714 North Capital Avenue. They are having a meal deal for $15.00 that includes two of their core line of house beers and a fresh, handmade two topping pizza. This generous offer is valid during Gen Con only (August 2-8, 2018). They are also promoting space for groups to come “game” in their taproom, requesting that groups of six or more call ahead to verify space availability (317-653-1884). Indiana City Brewing Co. is situated at 24 Shelby Street on the eastern edge of downtown in what was once the location of Home Brewing Company (pre-prohibition). For Gen Con they are offering 20% off a beer flight if you show your badge. Additionally, they are tapping the Black Lantern, a black IPA, just for Gen Con. Metazoa Brewing Co. is a pet friendly venue at 140 S. College Avenue. They have a spacious tap room, ample exterior seating and a dog park. Their brewers have brewed up a special Apricot Saison dubbed Prunus Maximus especially for the Gen Con crowd. Open until midnight on Friday and Saturday, this is a great place to do some table top gaming and unwind when the official events of the day are done. Round Town Brewery can be found in the Biltwell Event Center at 950 S. White River Parkway. The Gen Con specialty beer this year is the Klingon Raktajino, a coffee and blood orange red ale. Food is available through ClusterTruck. Website at roundtownbrewery.com or Facebook page – Round Town Brewery
St. Joseph Brewery & Public House is ensconsed in what was once the St. Joseph Catholic Church (closed in 1954) at 540 N. College Avenue. This year they are again serving the wildly popular 64 Bit Wit, a Belgian style Witbier especially for Gen Con. They are also offering dinner specials every day/night (they have a chef). Flat 12 Bierwerks is situated at 414 N. Dorman Street. They will be tapping the Alchemist of the Hinterlands, a Tripel weighing in at a hearty 11.5% ABV. In addition to their newly renovated tap room, they also boast a sizable beer garden. Food is available from their food partner, Hoagies and Hops. Fountain Square Brewery is located at 1301 Barth Avenue in the historic Fountain Square area. Their annual Gen Con offering this year will be the King of Sheep Wheat, a wheat ale. Centerpoint Brewing Company at 1125 Brookside Avenue has an appealing tap room. They have large community-style tables that are great for tabletop gaming with large groups. Many of these amazing venues are walkable when you are down town if you have time and energy between events. Along the way, you will encounter the cool historic aspects of the city as well as its unique cultural aspects. If you are driving, either a hired car or your own, parking is readily available. There is much more than the inside of a hotel room or the Convention Center in Indianapolis. Don’t miss it!
